Time to Say Good-Bye: The Mellon Arena

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

It’s a sad, yet happy day in the City of Pittsburgh. Today is the last regular season game in the History of the 48 year-old Mellon Arena. Trust me when I say their will be some misty eyes and man tears tonight as the city says farewell to the oldest arena in the NHL. (more…)

It's A Hockey Tuesday

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Wow! It’s only 2 days until Christmas.

Where does time go?

Last night I decided to bake, don’t know why I did since there will be way too much food Christmas Eve and Christmas day, but I decided to anyway. I had frozen sugar cookie dough in the freezer.

They came out just the way I like them with a nice doughy center so that when you reach the middle it’s like eating only the cookie dough.

Nom, nom, nom!

After that, I watched the Penguins game hoping for better results then Saturday’s massacre. Early on it didn’t look too good being down 0-2. Yes, once again, they rally in OT to beat the Buffalo Sabers, with a bunt from Sidney Crosby to win 3-4.

New Face of the Pittsburgh Pirates? He knows how to bunt.

New Face of the Pittsburgh Pirates? He knows how to bunt.

Dear Neil Huntington,

Please sign Sidney Crosby to a contract so he can teach your team to bunt. He’ll probably work out better than those to reality stars from India. I think it’s worth the investment.

Thanks!

Mark

What’s up with the commercials during the game? Versus, of course, is a horrible place to show hockey. From the announcers, the “We love Philly” mantra, thanks to Comcast, and the awful commercials we must endure to watch the game.

bob-174x201

I can’t believe they can get away with the “Bob the Enzyte” commercials. Did you notice the arrows kept point to wood? Or how they said, “This chubby Santa?” A little disturbing, but it could make a good drinking game. The ‘BOD’ commercials needed to stop too. What demo are they going after?

Oh, well too bad the radio is not in sync with the HD feed, or I would have listened to the radio. I hate when the radio is ahead or behind, it just ruins it for me.

As an early Christmas gift to myself, I’m going to the game tonight to see the Pens take on Tampa Bay. I actually bought the tickets at the beginning of the season since just about half of Tampa’s team is ex-Penguins.

How I want to see this tonight.

How I want to see this tonight.

I wish Barry Melrose was still the coach because that would have been awesome to see him stand there and pretend to coach.

Melrose

I don’t really blame Melrose for being pissed. The owners just signed a crap load of new people and thought it would work. May I point out that was the Penguins philosophy the year after the lockout. We all remember how that all turned out.

That’s all for now.

Later!

Jon Burton Out At WTAE

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Hello from Monsoonburgh…err…Pittsburgh. I can’t believe the amount of rain falling at this moment. I sort of wish it was snow because that would almost guarantee a white Christmas, but if this rain were snow there would be about 2 feet of it all ready and I would just complain about that.

So I was reading the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette off my iPhone, since their website crashes my computer for some reason, but anyway I was reading the A&E section because I am a follower of local TV and Radio.

There are nice stories in today’s PG about Andy Gastmeyer and Marilyn Brooks both whom are retiring. So make sure you read those stories, because it’s always sad when someone you see on TV almost everyday is gone.

Which leads me to something that was buried in yesterdays TV notes. Jon Burton is leaving WTAE after 8 years on December 31st.

buton

This is sad to me. WTAE is one of my favorite stations and JB, as he was known, was one of the best sports reporters in Pittsburgh. There was something in his delivery of sports that didn’t feel fake. Also, if you ever hear him on the DVE Morning Show, he was a funny guy.

In a statement from General Manager Rick Henry said the JB’s position was eliminated “due to economic condition.” It’s sad that was the reason they gave, but Burton seemed to be in good spirits about it and was very classy, as expected, in his statement saying, “I am excited to move on to the next phase of my career. I enjoyed my time here. This is a class organization through and through.”

See, a classy guy.

No replacement has been announced, but WTAE has one of the smallest sports departments, so I’m kinda surprised he got the boot. Who are they left with now Guy Junker who usually does weekends and Tim Benz, a fill in who, honestly, I don’t care for.

I have met Tim Benz in person several times, each was more off putting then the next, and someone needs a dose of humble pie. Once again, my opinion.

Maybe Jake Ploeger can fill in for a bit as he started as a sports reporter on WTAE before moving to weekend anchor, doubtful though.

I’ll have to write about local TV news at some point, just because I have opinions on the styles of the three local newscasts. Here’s my ranking just to show you WTAE, KDKA, then WPXI.

I’ll blame one person for all of this!

Yes, Sid Bream, this is your entire fault still!

Steelers Win 20-13 Over The Dallas Cowboys

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

This was on hell of a Steelers game. It was cold and windy. The first half was bazaar. But before the highlights quick story.

We meet 2 guys who drove 12,000+ miles from Dallas who are Steelers fans. Their names was Cliff and Patrick. The were insane and couldn’t believe how much fun tailgating was. They told us it’s totally different in Dallas and it’s more like show up for the game then leave not much before or after the game.

They had a great time at the game and vowed to make the drive again for another game. Best of luck to them on their drive back. To be from Dallas and Steelers fans and make the drive 12,000+ is impressive, but not unheard of for Steelers fans.

In our section 5 rows back was a Dallas fan who yapped the whole game. Threatened to beat people and his favorite phrase was “Get in his Kitchen!” When Townshend  intercepted that pass our whole section turned and looked at him. The look was priceless. He sat their biting his tongue because he now looked like an ass. His girlfriend sat there laughing too. She was wearing Cowboys gear, but you can tell she didn’t care about the game.

A word about Dallas fans. I have been to many Steelers games and I have never come across ruder fans than Dallas fans. Now I am not saying that all Dallas fans are this way, but there were several that were just rude and thought they were better than everyone else. I guess T.O. rubs off on people. Most likely those “fans” were Pittsburghers who are haters, so I’ll leave it at that.

Here’s the game highlights for your enjoyment!

Steelers Win, Beat Patriots 33-10

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Here is the important parts of the game in 3:39 seconds from NFL Video. It begins with Craig Wolfley going nuts about the weather! You gotta love that guy. It was a great game overall and nice to see the Steelers win in Foxboro.

Enjoy the highlights!

Is It Morning?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

As I write this it’s 9:41am I can’t believe I am up at this point. Last night I didn’t go to bed until 1 and got up at 6:30am like usual. The late bed time was caused by going to the Steelers game.

It was a great game that, if you didn’t know, the Steelers won 27-10. Surprisingly, it didn’t feel cold in the stadium. I thought it felt warmer last night then it did during Sunday’s odd 11-10 (First in the NFL final score) win against San Diego.

Sitting at Heinz Field was like being trapped in a snow globe at times. The sky looked clear then all of the sudden there was snow. It started out slow then got heavy and swirled around then stopped and started again, hence the snow globe analogy.

Other great news from last night, the Penguins beat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-2 WOO! Read Seth Rorabaugh’s recap on Empty Netters.

So it was a good night for Pittsburgh sports.

When I got home I watched “30 Rock” that I recorded on my Tivo. <3 <3 <3 this show. Steve Martin guest starred on last night’s episode, he was funny, but nothing beat Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and Jack McBryer. But last night Tracey Morgan made me laugh heard with his Japanese sex doll. I’m not going in more detail about it except to say they did a “The More you know” spoof at the end of the show and it was a highlight for me.

If you missed “30 Rock” watch it on Hulu or NBC.com.

In sad TV news ABC “did not order” additional episodes of “Dirty Sexy Money,” “Eli Stone” and one of my favorite and creative shows “Pushing Daisies.”

I was always hot and cold about “Dirty Sexy Money” and “Eli Stone,” but I always enjoyed “Pushing Daisies.” The cast was great, the stories were always quirky and it was shot in a really intriguing way.  I enjoyed this weeks episode with guest Fred Willard as “The Great Herrmann.” If you missed any of this years episodes watch them at ABC.com.

OK, hopefully sometime this weekend I will post the rest of the vacation stuff. I have all most all the pictures ready just to to get a few of one of the people that was there with me as he as some pictures that I need to tell a complete story.

Until then…

Steelers, Penguins, Garfield?

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

“When will the snow stop?”

That’s what I asked myself this morning while driving to work. I have to sit through a Steelers game tonight and as I don’t mind the cold it just sucks when it’s snowing. Just ask anyone standing in line when the sky opened up on Sunday and soaked everyone waiting to get in.

I wonder if they will have more people working the security lines today as Sunday was a disaster as there were for female checkers who can only pat down other females to one guy in every line and 2 of the 4 females stood around and did nothing.

Not very efficient. I guess it is better than some NFL stadiums where they have CLEAR Pass lanes for persons who have the Clear Pass for airports. There never should be 4 hour waits to get into a stadium. And I don’t fully understand how that is possible.

Also tonight the Pens take on the Thrashers in Atlanta. So I have to say who made this conflicting schedule. Why put both games on the same day only an hour 1/2 apart? It would different if it was a Pirate game, but the Steelers and the Pens should never have to compete with each other eventhought the Pens game will be half over when the Steelers game starts that conflict shouldn’t happen.

And Finally today a fun website. Has anyone seen the site Garfield minus Garfield? It’s quite funny to see the Garfiled comics stripped of Garfield and what it reveals about his owner Jon Arbuckle, he’s really depressed if you ask me. So you can check out Garfield minus Garfield by clicking HERE!

Later Pittsburghers!

Dear Steelers I Want My Chocolate

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Ok let me begin by saying I owe all o you a vacation update and that will be coming during the week as things are finally settling down. It will come in probably three parts because there is a post in itself about the women who I sat next to and the joys of Business Class!

Ok on to explaining the title of the post.

During the Steelers games they have a company, Songwhale, sponsor their text to win segments.

Well today it was “Text chocolate” to win one of 5 baskets of… well… Chocolate. So I did just to do it. It’s free didn’t cost anything, so I did see.

Text1 As you can see I got another text at 7:54 that I won and I had 30 minutes to redeem the winnings. As you can see it says that the winners will be notified in the 3rd Quarter. Well at 7:54 the game was way over with an NFL first finale score of 11-10 Steelers and I was in my car just turning out of the parking lot. Now if you have ever been to a Steelers game you know what it’s like getting out of the lots. There was no way I was:

A) Walking all of the way back to Gate A

B) Try to get past security in the Stadium to walk in

C) That was no where near the 3rd Quarter so they gave inadequate time to pick up the prize.

So I tried responding to the text, knowing full well it’s an automated system, but I gave it a shot.

Text 2

So when I typed ‘HELP’ it said something about textopoly. I was like, Oh well, but at the same time I felt ripped off from my chocolate bar, it’s not everyday you win something. Even winning something small feels good.

So Dear Steelers I want my Chocolate!

Thanks!

Pens Win in SO Beat Boston 2-1

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Happy Tuesday!

Glad everyone is enjoying the SNL videos on the site.

Today we talk hockey, as the Pens win in a shoot out in Boston.

So let’s open (or in this case click open, as the NHL has gone paperless with media guides) the media guide and do a small recap.

But this is no ordinary recap this is a getting to know you sort of recap to help you fair readers get acquainted with your Pittsburgh Penguins. Ok let’s click this open. Like the virtual cover?

So Miroslav Satan had the lone regulation goal. Let’s take a look at him without a helmet.

He reminds me of one of my college roommates must be the chin hair.

And what person information did he share with us?

The guy likes Italy, Italian food and French food. So all the “snow bunnies” line up in your best French maid outfit and bring your best ziti.

The man last night was Danny Sabourin

Um…nice hair.

He shares some info with us.

Tennis? Interesting.

Orpik had this to say about his performance

And just so you know this man’s eyes are SCAREY, just look.

:shudder:

Well after several shots in the shoutout, Geno puts one in.

What deep dark personal information will you share Geno?

The “Mummy?!” Seriously? Not like Yo Gabba Gabba, I know you watch it with Gonchar’s little girl.

Who knew?

Pens win 2-1 in a Shot Out! Woo!

Ok that’s it for now, I hoped you like getting to know your Pittsburgh Penguins.

Foil Me This!

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Ok while reading over some tweets on Twitter someone linked to this site http://okfoil.com/

And what is the first thing I see on the page, well a picture of Troy Polamalu done in foil.

Kinda cool and scary at the same time, here’s the full foil statue.

Like I said it’s scary and cool at the same time.

Thoughts?
