Time to Say Good-Bye: The Mellon Arena

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

It’s a sad, yet happy day in the City of Pittsburgh. Today is the last regular season game in the History of the 48 year-old Mellon Arena. Trust me when I say their will be some misty eyes and man tears tonight as the city says farewell to the oldest arena in the NHL. (more…)

It All Ends Tomorrow

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Tomorrow is my last day of Grad School! Hooray!

I wrote my final paper for my “Drama of Leadership” class. Yes that’s the classes name and I am glad to be done with it. Not that it was hard, I just hate writing papers.

The really big news tomorrow concerns my event planning class. Tomorrow morning our group of 4 is going to present our event plan for the opening of the Consol Energy Center to several people of the Penguins and Mellon Arena. So it’s safe to say I’m a little freaked out and excited at the same time. Here’s a list of people we are presenting too:

James Santilli, VP of Marketing, Pittsburgh Penguins

Jill Shipley, Director of Fan Development & Special Events, Pittsburgh Penguins

Ross Miller, Director of Marketing, Pittsburgh Penguins

Jay Roberts, General Manager, Mellon Arena

Rob Goodman, Assistant General Manager & Director of Marketing, Mellon Arena

Yeah, who knew these people would take such interest in MBA presentation, but they did so I’m happy they care enough to see what we came up with and I hope they use some of the ideas we have for when the Consol Energy Center Opens.

Here’s a preview of one of our slogans:

BIG, BIG Thanks to Ryan Lenocker of KickSave Design for putting up with me the past few weeks while he worked on a few logos for us. Thanks Ryan for all of your help.

Call It What You Will, "The Consol Energy Center"

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Yeah, so the Penguins have an agreement with Consol Energy to name the new arena.

The official name will be The Consol Energy Center. That sounds very similar to the Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota, but non-the-less we are stuck with it for 21 years when the center opens in 2010. Consol also owns the naming rights to the Washington Wild Things stadium call Consol Energy Park.

So as Pittsburgh-ers we like to give things nicknames (ex. Civic Arena/Mellon Arena = The Igloo), so I posed the question to people at work and here are the responses to “What will eventually call this place?”

“The new arena

The arena

CEC

C Center

The EC

The Energy Center

The Crosby Center”

“How about the Coal Center”

“You could go with “The House that Sid Built”, but given it’s location in uptown and close proximity to the hill district, I’m gonna call it… “Target practice”.”

“The New Igloo?  Igloo 2?  The Coal Mine?  Why does a coal company sponsor things?  Does their advertising convince people to go buy a sack of their brand of coal?”

I figured people will just call it “the new arena” for a long while because some people in Pittsburgh still give directions on things that aren’t there anymore.

I like “The Coal Mine” for some reason. It’s catchy. I have a feeling we will have to wait for the thing to be built and open before we can officially provide a nickname for the Consol Energy Center AKA TBD.

So what’s your nickname for the Consol Energy Center?
